FLEETWOOD, Lancs, 1 November, 2008
The Fleetwood Town were amongst the heroes and rising stars of sport in Lancashire who were honoured at the 2008 Lancashire Sports Awards, a glittering ceremony held at Preston Guild Hall.
A host of stars from the world of sport including Sir Tom Finney OBE, Jimmy Armfield OBE, Gladiator 'Panther' (A.K.A. Kara Nwidobie) and Paralympians Shelly Woods, Felicity Coulthard and Graeme Ballard were amongst the 480-strong audience for the 7th annual awards dinner, that recognised the achievements of people who have made the most outstanding contribution to sport in the Lancashire. The evening was presented by BBC Radio Lancashire's DJ Phil Trow.
Chris Garrett, Fleetwood Town FC Community Development Officer, scooped the Wyre Coach of the Year Award whilst FTFC Juniors were named Wyre Community Club of the Year.
Chairman of Fleetwood Town Juniors, Phil Clayton said, "We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and were presented with the two awards. This is a tremendous achievement by the all concerned in the Junior set-up and the club in general. We've come a long way since joining forces with Fleetwood Town. It's an achievement everyone can be proud of. Chris Garrett's award is the icing on the cake and shows the hard work and dedication he puts into his role. His role includes coaching youngsters at the club and going out into schools in the area with his team to provide coaching. It's good to see his skill and love of the game has been recognised in this way. Parents can also take encouragement when they are looking to involve their daughter or son in a community-based sporting activity. It's a great set-up and there's a place for all children, regardless of ability or knowledge of football"
Fleetwood Town chairman Andy Pilley added, "both the Juniors and Chris Garrett are worthy winners of these two awards. It's a tribute to all the hard work and tremendous progress that has been made by both the Juniors and Chris. So, it's a big round of applause from everyone associated with the club to both Chris and the Juniors."
Adrian Leather, Chief Executive of Lancashire Sport, who organised the event, commented ‘This evening is all about celebrating Lancashire’s talented young sports men and women, and those who give up their time to coach and support sports clubs which play such a crucial role at the grass roots of sport. Sport has a huge impact on people’s lives and our clubs are at the very heart of our communities – bringing enjoyment, fitness and a real sense of achievement to people from all walks of life’.
