The Fleetwood Town coaching sessions for boys and girls are held on the all weather pitches at Fleetwood Sports College and in the school sports hall during the winter months.  The club, however, will be shortly switching back to the Memorial Park each Saturday morning.

All coaches are FA qualified and trained in child protection and first aid.   Matty Mecklenburgh is currently sidelined from the Fleetwood Town Under 18's team due to injury and is one of the coaches. The 17-year-old is a qualified FA Level One coach and he feels teaching the youngsters is a worthwhile pastime.

“I really enjoy the coaching.  My studies take up a great deal of time and the coaching is an ideal way to relax.  It keeps me busy and not just on Saturday mornings.  I plan sessions during the week and use what I have learnt on the FA course I attended.  There’s nothing better than teaching a youngster a move or a drill and seeing them take that skill into a game with them. It makes you fell good about yourself.

“It also shows they are listening and learning which is of benefit.  The social side brings them in contact with friends and they learn how to band together as a team.  Parents also welcome having their kids using up plenty of energy early in the weekend!

“It’s a safe environment for youngsters as well. All personnel are CRB checked and coaches are first aid trained, “added 17-year-old Matty (below).

Taylor Robson has been a Saturday Morning Club regular for the last two years. Mum Zowie said “Taylor constantly has a football with him.  He’s doing really, really well at the club. He lives and breathes football.

“It’s a fantastic setup and the coaches do a good job.  It teaches them discipline and respect. Teamwork and listening skills are also included. These things all come together and are important, particularly at this age,” said Zowie with daughter Isobel (pictured - Taylor is in the background).

Taylor even managed a goal in one session on Saturday morning.  The Flakefleet Primary youngster said “The keeper lifted his leg up and I belted the ball into the net.”

Former Mayor of Wyre, Councillor Keith Riley has been instrumental in securing a Lancashire County Council grant for the Fleetwood Town Juniors popular Saturday Morning Club. Community Development Officer Chris Garret now has the task of allocating the funds for vital equipment.

County Councillor Riley expressed his delight at being able to help Fleetwood Town Junior Football Club and recognised the work done in the community.  "The coaches, led by Chris Garrett, devote an enormous amount of time in not only coaching boys and girls in footballing skills but also in living healthier lifestyles. It’s absolutely delightful to visit the Saturday Morning Club. People often say to me, particularly in Fleetwood, that children have nothing to do. The setup here disproves that completely.  It shows what you can do if you have organised volunteers who are willing to help the youngsters in your town. This club is a prime example. Children have a lot of natural energy and that needs channelling in the right way.  This is what the Saturday Morning Club is doing.  I couldn’t be more delighted to have helped out with this grant of £1250 which I am sure will be well used by Chris Garret to buy equipment that is absolutely needed," said Councillor Riley.

“The club are also putting plenty back into the community. I understand the Fleetwood Town Juniors are offering 30 free places on the Christmas Soccer School. This is wonderful news to have something helping families, especially in these tight financial times. We know the downturn is bad and even more so for Fleetwood. It’s great the club are helping the community at large. They are putting a lot back and it’s nice to see a club doing just that. I’m ever so pleased to have an association with Fleetwood Town,” added the former civic leader.

Chris Garrett said on Saturday morning “This grant from Lancashire County Council means a lot to the Saturday Morning Club.  Thanks to Councillor Riley, we have the opportunity to buy more sports equipment for the children. When they turn up, we want each child to have a football and the right equipment to train with. This will help them develop skills and move onto the next level whilst progressing at their own pace. It will also make them feel part of the wider football club. This grant is fantastic.  We can now go away and gather our thoughts as to the best way to invest this money.  The equipment we will buy is not only for use with the Saturday Morning Club, but also the school holiday soccer courses and my regular visits into local schools where I provide coaching."

Chris Garrett can be contacted on 07760 363543.
