FLEETWOOD, Lancs, 12 January, 2009
Fleetwood Girls U14 13-1 Westbury Girls U14
Sunday, 11th January 2009
Due to the poor weather this was the first competitive game since early November. Sadly, during that time, one of our staunchest supporters, Babs Winton, had died and the game started with a one minute silence in her honour. The girls also wore special shirts in tribute to her memory.
Fleetwood were quickly into their stride and an early raid into the box resulted in the visiting goalkeeper crashing into Megan Brown, conceding a penalty and Fleetwood one nil up.
Although Westbury stuck to their task Fleetwood, were to prove too much for them in all areas of the park for most of the match. Fleetwood began to develop their passing game, so often wrong-footing the opposition with a telling ball. The same pattern resulted time after time with Em McCarthy (picture 1) threading the ball through to Rebecca Harper (picture 2) who eventually slotted home.
In midfield Sarah Fay, Loz Fail, and Bex Lowe won crucial possession and tantalised the opposition down both flanks, whilst Em McCarthy looked dangerous and was, by also finding the net.
As the half progressed it was becoming a story of missed opportunities. Fleetwood could have had a bagful and supporters began to wonder if it was to be one of those days when dominance did not translate into goals. Westbury rallied and had an occasional foray into Fleetwood’s half. Chloe Holme, Vix Lowe, Cath Robinson and Steph Massie worked together as a unit at the back and snuffed out any danger.
Lottie Walsh, back in goal, took command of her box and distributed the ball intelligently and accurately. In Westbury’s best attack their striker shot towards the top left corner but Lottie Walsh skilfully palmed the ball to safety and Chloe Holme tidied up.
By halftime Fleetwood were seven nil up.
Fleetwood were just as dominant in the second half, with substitutes Em Hanson and Jess Smith demonstrating that the squad has talent in depth. Further goals from Rebecca Harper and Em McCarthy, bringing their tally to six each and a screamer from Steph Massie meant that Fleetwood amassed thirteen goals in a walk-away win. Westbury managed a consolation goal late in the half but the match had been beyond them for some time.
This was an accomplished performance from the Fleetwood girls who retain their 100% record for the season.
