FLEETWOOD, Lancs, September 23, 2008
Lancaster City Res v Fleetwood Town Res
Lancit Haulage Lancashire League
Monday 22nd September
Fleetwood consolidated their tabletop position with a comfortable victory against bottom placed Lancaster City. Apart from the opening ten minutes, the game was never really a contest. Town even managed to play keep-ball for the last ten minutes after they had carved open the City defence time again.
City started brightly and the Fleetwood back line took its time to get a grip of proceedings. After a ten-minute break for an injury to a city forward, which resulted in him being stretched off, Town suddenly found their stride. A Mark Peers (pictured) cross was needlessly handled by a City defender inside the box and Steve Foster tucked the spot-kick away. Chances came at a regular rate but the Town had to wait until the stroke of half time to get their second, Peers cutting in from the left wing to smash a shot into the corner of the goal.
It was again Peers who struck the third goal. This time cracking a shot from all of twenty five yards past the hapless keeper. For the second game running Fleetwood conceded a goal straight from the re-start. The defence was caught napping despite Danny Hurst initially making an incredible first stop, City were first for the tap-in. For the remainder of the match Fleetwood toyed with their opposition, with Anthony Warwick impressing. Mark Basag scored with ten minutes to go following a goal mouth scramble. The final goal of the evening came from the energetic Colin Potts. He had already hit the post twice during the game and had several efforts on goal, being set up by Peers on three occasions. The Potts goal came from more good work by Warwick and Peers, who slipped the ball through for a stylish finish. Which was more than be said for his goal celebrations, leave it on the dance floor Colin!
