Fleetwood returned to winning ways with this comfortable victory after Friday night’s debacle. Town were always in control of the game and the only disappointment of the evening was that more of the numerous chances created were not taken. Danny Penswick alone, with a little more fortune, could have come off the pitch with a hat trick.
The first goal of the evening, following some gentle midfield sparring, came when Shaun Beeley raced through the Salford rear guard and picked out Jason Rawcliffe galloping into the penalty area. Rawcliffe controlled and gently lifted the ball over the on rushing keeper. The second goal soon followed. A similar break and this time Anthony Warwick was on the end of a defence splitting pass from centre half Stuart Danson. Warwick finished smartly from twelve yards. Michael Booth (pictured), promoted from the under18s, Ashley Dunn, Penswick and Warwick all had opportunities to score but some inspired goal keeping and bad luck kept the score to two nil at the break.
The second half followed the same pattern up until the hour mark when out of the blue Salford was awarded a penalty. The home forward brought was crashing down by Mark Smith in the Fleetwood goal. The score line suddenly flattered the hosts but within five minutes the two goal cushion was restored when Ashley Dunn rounded the keeper to finish with a swagger. There was still time for Town to miss more good chances but the score was to remain the same as Salford hung on grimly. With twenty minutes remaining Matty Wood and Grant Dell, two more of the under 18 squad, were introduced. Dell going close to marking his debut with a goal bound effort blocked again by the home keeper’s legs.
A solid performance, just a shame the chances were not taken to inflict even more damage.
